Clinton Political Director Jumps Into California Governor Race
Amanda Rentería has filed paperwork to run for California governor. Rentería has been serving as California Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s operations chief. Before that, she was the Political Director for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign -- a job she took following her unsuccessful 2014 challenge to Congressman David Valadao (R-CA). The 43-year-old would join a male-dominated field led by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Her filing comes amid renewed questions about the leading Democrats’ extramarital affairs against the backdrop of the roiling #Metoo movement. The seemingly hasty rollout of her bid comes without a statement by the candidate, a campaign website, or any apparent staff. Rentería also missed the deadline to seek the endorsement of the state Democratic Party or to speak at its convention next week. Given how tight the race is between Newsom and Villaraigosa, her candidacy could help deliver the race to Newsom if Latino voters split the vote. Rentería was a financial analyst for Goldman Sachs before switching to the public sector. The Stanford and Harvard Business School graduate became the first Latina Chief of Staff in history when she took the helm in the office of Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). Will she make history again? We’ll be watching. More here.
